Covid Test Requirements and Current Movement Restrictions in Panama

getting a covid test in panamaTo fly into Panama, the rules changes occassionally so it is best to refer to the

Tourism Panama website for the latest news.

When you leave Panama, some countries require a negative Covid test to get on the flight to fly home.

Many airlines require that you present a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination to board the flight to Panama.  You also need to fill out the Electronic Health Affidavit form BEFORE you board your flight to Panama.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) announced that a negative Covid test will be required for international travelers to fly to the United States effective January 26th.

See The CDC Notification HERE.

Per the CDC, all passengers are required to get a viral test (a test for current infection) no longer than the day before your flight to the U.S. departs, or provide written documentation of their laboratory test result (paper or electronic copy) to the airline or provide documentation of having recovered from COVID-19. Airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers or documentation of recovery before they board. If a passenger does not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery or chooses not to take a test, the airline must deny boarding to the passenger.

This also applies to travelers on private jets and chartered flights but excludes travelers which are only transiting and not entering the US.

When Should You Get Tested?

The CDC requires the test date to be no more than the day before the scheduled departure to fly to the United States.

Who Checks Test Results?

Travelers are required to provide their test results in a paper or digital copy to the airline they are traveling with.

What Kind of Test Is Acceptable to Fly to the United States?

Airlines are allowed to accept both COVID-19 PCR and rapid-antigen tests.

For Canada, only a PCR test is acceptable and is required for everyone flying to Panama.  Only vaccinated people are allowed to enter Canada.

What If I Have Been Vaccinated?

Travelers that have been vaccinated are not exempt and will be required to provide negative COVID-19 test results to fly back to the United States or Canada.

What are the current curfew and quarantine restrictions in Panama?

In Panama, there is a country-wide curfew from 1 am to 4 am.

You are required to wear a mask anywhere in public.

Can You Get a Covid Test During a Panama Relocation Tour or a Private Tour?

On the last day of the tour, you can get tested at a lab in Boquete.  If you plan to travel around Panama after the tour, see the list of places to get tested below.  You can also get tested at Tocumen International Airport before your flight to leave Panama, however they only provide an antigen test so Canadians will need to get tested at a lab in Panama City.

If you test positive in Panama, you will be required to quarantine for 14 days at either the hotel where you are or an authorized Covid hotel.  The quarantine will be at your expense.

Please note: This is not an OFFICIAL list but one that we have compiled based on information provided by each institution. Please contact the hospital/clinic/lab with any questions.

  2. Susan says

thanks for this info…. I don’t see anything in Veraguas… do you know of anything there? thanks

    • Jackie Lange says

there is no place in Veraguas to get tested unless you have symptons.

  3. nonie ratcliff says

Jackie, thank you so much for the information. I feel much more confident now flying in and out of Panama.

  4. Bob says

Is the nasal swab (short probe) available & accepted for the PCR test administered in Panama for return flights to the US, or is nasopharangeal (long probe) required? Makes a big difference. Thanks

    • Jackie Lange says

I do not know which kind of nasal swab is done.

  5. Tommy T says

Do the results need to be in English when flying from Panama to the USA

  6. Sam P says

Hello Jackie, I heard there’s a new COVID test regulation implemented to enter and exit Chiquiri. Since you live in Boquete, do you have any info on it? Would be appreciated if you have any info to share. Thank you.

    • Jackie Lange says

you need a covid test to leave Chiriqui province. you can get it at the airport.

  7. Dorrett Thompson says

Which test is more acceptable at the airport in Panama? Is the Antigen very acceptable or is it the PCR. What test are most people entering Panama taking. I believe the Antigen is a shorter nasal probe. However. would like to know what most people are presenting and if the Rapid Antigen is still acceptable. For 48 hours prior. the Antigen is the most convenient. PCR time frame is somewhat unpredictable and can take longer time for results.

  8. Charlene Kehoe says

Hi Jackie, what are the directions to Biomedica in Boquete to get the antigen test before departure? Thanks, Charlene

    • Jackie Lange says

Biomedica in behind Multibank in Boquetre. Multibank is on main street across the street from REvilla pharmacy

  9. Andrew Eyer says

So, a Covid test is needed before leaving David for Panama City on the last day of the tour?

I was planning on doing a Home Test (Antigen) the day before leaving Boquete (10/21). The results of the test should be OK for both my departure from David on the last day of the tour (10/22) and my departure for the States on 10/23, correct? (CDC approves of home antigen tests for entry to the US)

Will be getting antigen rapid test at my pharmacy prior to heading to Panama.

    • Jackie Lange says

A covid test is NOT needed to fly from David to Panama City.

I’m not sure if the CDC approves a home test. You’ll need to check their website

  10. Eric says

Hi Jackie, what happens if you test positive before going home?
The clinic will provide you the results online, then are you supposed to change your flight and go quarantine in whatever hotel you happen to be staying at?
Or are you expected to go checkin at one of the Covid hotels they use for non-vaccinated arrival travelers?

    • Jackie Lange says

If you test positive before going home, you will be required to quarantine for 14 days. You can stay in the hotel where you were if there are rooms available OR MINSA ( the health department) will take you to a Covid hotel. The Covid hotels for people who test positive is different than the hotels where non-vaccinated quarantine for 3 days when they come into Panama. MINSA will check on you daily if you test positive. They will not release you until you have a negative covid test.

      • Angela Longhurst says

If I test positive at a clinic to come back to the US, MINSA will test is daily or is it a mandatory 10 days tgen they will test?

        • Angela Longhurst says

Couldnt I not tell them where I am staying and test on my own in 3 days?

        • Jackie Lange says

If you test positive in Panama, there is a mandatory 14 day quarantine – at your expense. They will test you at the end of the 14 days to determine if you test negative.

  11. Wendy Cloutier says

    Hi Jackie

Do you know if there are any locations in Boquete that do PCR tests? If yes, typically how long to get results?

    • Jackie Lange says

Boquete sends the PCR tests to David so it takes 3-4 days for the results. It’s better to go to David for a PCR test

  12. Dr Evelyn Bohm says
