Many people wait until they turn 65 to retire. I suppose it is because they need the money from Social Security or the pension from their job. But you should really consider retiring early because you just don’t know how much time you will have after you turn 65.
When my husband and I first talked about retiring early, he wanted to wait until he turned 65 because his retirement income would be much more if he waited. But because we moved to Panama, we were able to drastically reduce our cost of living so he could retire early. In most parts of Panama, a couple can live well on less than $2000 a month including health insurance and rent.
My husband retired almost 10 years early and it’s a good thing he did. He turned 65 in February and died in August – only 43 days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Because he retired early, he got to enjoy a work-free, stress-free life living in Panama for many years
Don’t wait! You never know how much time you will have to enjoy your retirement if you work until you are in your 60’s.
Many people who have come on our tours have retired early – some in the 40s and 50s. The rental income from their house in North America completely supports them in Panama. Others do freelance work to supplement their income.
I admire Billy and Akaisha Kaderli of Retire Early Lifestyle who gave up their briefcases for backpacks more than twenty years ago. ..when they were only 38. Instead of the fancy clothes, house and car, they have a simple mobile home in Arizona as a home base but spend most of their time in Guatemala, Mexico, Thailand or other exotic locations. Living overseas they are able to drastically reduce their costs and live comfortably on about $2000 per month. You could too!
It’s all about priorities!
