9 Reasons Panama Is Popular With Retirees Looking To Live Internationally

I was recently interviewed by Cindy Barks for an article for TravelAwaits online magazine.

We discussed why Panama has become an expat magnet for these 9 reasons:

1. Quick flight to North America.
It’s a two-hour flight from Panama City to Miami and less than a four-hour flight to Houston

2. Climate is Ideal
You can literally pick your ideal temperature based on the elevation where you live! Because Panama is only 9 degrees from the equator, the temperature remains constant all year.

3. Plenty of Expats
Some towns in Panama have a lot of expats but some don’t. If you want to make your transition to living in a foreign country easier, you might want to start out in a town with a lot of other expats like Coronado, Boquete, Volcan or Panama City.

4. Beaches and Mountains
Panama has 1500 miles of coastline and beautiful mountain ridges down the center of the country. Panama has something for everyone!

5. Cost of Living in Lower
In the article, some people report that their cost of living is 60% less than where they lived in the United States. Many things are much more affordable in Panama.

6. Retirees Receive Special Benefits
Panama offers many special discounts for retirees with their famous Pensionado discounts that help you save on just about everything you do. You get 20% off at restaurants, 10% discounts at the pharmacy, 25% off utility bills, 25% off airfare to anywhere in the world, 50% off entertainment like movie theaters, and more.

7. Healthcare is Affordable (and excellent)
Panama’s doctors are well trained and many speak English. A routine doctor visit is less than $20 without insurance. A specialist is $40-$50 without insurance. Or, you can save even more at the public healthcare system where it is only $2 to see a doctor or $5 for a specialist.

8. It’s Safe
Most areas in Panama are very safe. Every country has crime but it is usually only in a few areas.

9. Panamanians are Friendly
Panamanians are the most friendly people you’ll ever meet. Foreigners have been coming to Panama for more than 100 years so they are familiar with having foreigners as neighbors.
