The REAL Pros and Cons of Living in Panama (What Most People Won’t Tell You)
If you’ve been researching a move to Panama, you’ve probably seen a lot of videos and articles highlighting the benefits—lower cost of living, beautiful weather, friendly people, and affordable healthcare.
And while all of that is true… it’s not the whole story.
Panama is an incredible place to live—but it’s not perfect. No country is. The key to success isn’t just knowing the pros and cons… it’s understanding how they apply to you.
Because here’s the most important thing you need to know:
There is no “one Panama.”
Every area is completely different. A con in one place is often solved by moving to a different area. And a pro in one location may not exist somewhere else.
Location matters… a lot.
Why Location in Panama Matters
More Than Anything
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that Panama is the same everywhere. It’s not.
You can live in:
A cool mountain town like Boquete or El Valle
A hot, tropical beach community
A modern, fast-paced city like Panama City
A calm suburb of Panama City with lush greenery
A quiet, rural farming area
An island on the Caribbean side of Panama
Each of these feels like a completely different lifestyle—and in many ways, a different country.
Panama has many different microlimiates — and microlifestyles!
For example, if you move to the beach and find it too hot and humid, that doesn’t mean Panama isn’t right for you. It just means you chose the wrong location. Move to a higher elevation, and suddenly the weather is perfect.
If you move to a quiet mountain town and feel bored, get frustrated that you have to drive more than an hour to see a doctor, you may thrive in a more vibrant area closer to Panama City.
Some areas in Panama City are noisy and hectic, but move to a different area in Panama City, and you will find lush green scenery and calm (with smooth sidewalks)
Location matters!
You don’t need to leave Panama to fix a problem—you just need to change locations.
This is one reason we strongly recommend that you do not buy real estate until you have lived in Panama for at least a year or two. You may need to change locations several times before you find your “sweet spot”. It’s easy to get out of a lease, but it can take many years to sell real estate.
The Pros of Living in Panama
Let’s start with the reasons so many people are choosing Panama as their new home.
✅Lower Cost of Living
For many people, Panama offers the opportunity to live better for less. Housing, healthcare, insurance, and even groceries can be significantly more affordable than in the United States or Canada.
It’s very common for retirees—and even some couples—to live comfortably on $1,500 to $2,500 per month, depending on lifestyle and location.
But some areas in Panama will cost $3500 or more per month.
✅Affordable, Quality Healthcare
Healthcare is one of the biggest reasons people move to Panama.
You can expect:
🔵Public healthcare visits cost around $2
🔵Private doctor visits typically cost $20–$50 without insurance
🔵High-quality care, with many doctors trained in the United States
For those concerned about rising healthcare costs back home, this alone can be life-changing.
✅Year-Round Warm Weather (With Options)
Panama offers something unique—you can choose your climate based on the elevation.
If you love heat and humidity, Panama City or the beach may be perfect. If you prefer cooler temperatures, the mountains offer spring-like weather year-round.
There’s no snow, no hurricanes, no harsh winters, and plenty of opportunity to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle every day of the year.
✅Easy Residency Options
Panama has some of the most attractive residency programs in the world.
The Pensionado Visa is especially popular because it’s:
🔵Affordable
🔵Fast (permanent residency in about 6 months)
🔵Designed for retirees with a lifetime income
There are other options, such as the Friendly Nations Visa, depending on your situation.
✅Friendly People and Strong Community
Panamanians are known for being warm and welcoming. In addition, there are well-established expat communities throughout the country.
Many people are surprised by how quickly they build friendships and feel at home—especially when they plug into the right network.
✅A Slower, Less Stressful Lifestyle
One of the biggest benefits people don’t fully understand until they experience it is the reduction in stress.
Life moves at a slower pace. There’s less pressure, less urgency, and more time to enjoy everyday life.
For many, this is the biggest “pro” of all.
The Cons of Living in Panama
Now let’s talk about the realities—because being prepared makes all the difference.
⛔Things Move Slower
Panama has a more relaxed pace of life, which can be wonderful… but also frustrating.
Processes can take longer. Bureaucracy exists. The “mañana” culture is real.
It can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days to open a bank account in Panama.
If you’re used to everything happening quickly and efficiently, this can take some adjustment.
⛔Weather Can Be Intense
If you choose Panama City or a beach location, expect heat and humidity—sometimes more than you anticipated. The need for air conditioning will drive up your electric bill.
There is also a rainy season, which can be heavier than what many people are used to.
The highland areas, such as El Valle de Anton, Boquete, and Volcan, get 200-250 inches of rain a year. Mornings are usually blue skies and sunshine, but it will rain in the late afternoon, so plan your day around it.
But again, this ties back to location. If the weather doesn’t suit you, there are cooler (or warmer) areas just a few hours away.
The “dry arc” around Coronado, Gorgona, and San Carlos gets about 100 inches of rain a year, but you’re dealing with warmer weather and high electric bills.
⛔Infrastructure Varies
Not every area has the same level of development.
You may encounter:
🔵Uneven roads
🔵Limited sidewalks
🔵Inconsistent infrastructure in rural areas
🔵Some areas have more power outages than others
Some people adapt easily, while others find it frustrating.
⛔Cultural Differences
Panama is not the United States—and that’s not a bad thing, but it is something to be aware of.
Customer service expectations, communication styles, and day-to-day processes can be different. Your experience will depend largely on your mindset and your willingness to adapt.
Panamanians love fireworks, loud music, and parades.
⛔A Reality Many People Don’t Talk About
Not All People Are a Good Fit for Expat Life
Most expats in Panama are wonderful people—but not all of them.
Some people move to Panama hoping to escape stress, division, or negativity… but they bring those same attitudes with them.
You may encounter:
🔵Strong political opinions
🔵Negative or complaining personalities
🔵Occasionally, insensitive or inappropriate behavior
The good news is that Panama has a large and diverse expat community.
Some people are just not a good fit for an expat lifestyle.
You get to choose who you spend time with.
Most expats are great people — but you still need to be careful!
⛔Yes, There Are Scammers (Even Among Expats)
Just like anywhere in the world, there are people who take advantage of others—and sometimes, they are expats.
This can include:
🔵Misleading real estate deals
🔵Unlicensed “helpers” offering services
🔵Bad advice from people with little experience
🔵“Too good to be true” investment opportunities
The key is to stay cautious and informed.
This is exactly why we vet the people we recommend!
And why we tell people – don’t try to figure this out on your own.
And it’s why we have thoroughly vetted recommendations for lawyers, real estate agents, insurance brokers, and everything else you need. You’ll get all of those leads during an all-inclusive Panama Relocation Tour or in the Online Panama Relocation Guide.
The Biggest Mistakes People Make
The people who struggle in Panama usually have one thing in common—they rushed the process.
Common mistakes include:
🔵Choosing a location based on YouTube or Facebook
🔵Not visiting multiple areas
🔵Buying property too soon
🔵Taking advice from the wrong people
These mistakes are avoidable—but only if you know what to look for.
Two People. One Country. Completely Different Outcomes.
After helping thousands of people move to Panama since 2010, I’ve seen something fascinating.
Two people can move to the same country—even the same condo complex- and have completely different experiences.
I remember one couple who did most of their research online. They picked a beach location that looked perfect in videos and decided it was “the place” for them.
They did a Private Tour of that one area, then moved there full-time, buying a condo right away, and started building their life. They did not even check out other areas in Panama.
But within a few months, they were miserable.
It was hotter than they expected. They spent most of their time inside because it was “too hot” to go outside. Their electric bill was $300 a month because they ran their air conditioners full-time. They didn’t connect with the people around them (because they rarely left their condo). Small frustrations turned into bigger ones.
Eventually, they left Panama and said, “It just wasn’t what we thought it would be.”
But the truth is… it wasn’t Panama.
It was the location they chose, the expectations they had, and the lack of guidance before making big decisions.
Now, I think about another couple who approached things differently.
They explored multiple areas during an all-inclusive Panama Relocation Tour. They asked questions. They took their time.
Before coming to Panama, they were pretty sure they wanted to live in Boquete.
But after a few days, they realized Boquete was way too crowded.
During the tour, one area they visited was Penonome. It has everything they needed. They went back there after their Panama Relocation Tour to do more exploring.
The weather felt perfect. The lifestyle matched what they wanted. It was less crowded and way more affordable than Boquete. They found their people.
Today, they’re still in Penonome—happy, relaxed, and loving their life.
And they say, “Moving to Panama was the best decision we ever made.”
Same country.
Two completely different outcomes.
And that’s why we say….
Panama is not one-size-fits-all.
There is no “perfect place” for everyone.
Every place in Panama has pros and cons.
A con in one area can be easily resolved by moving to another.
A pro in one area may be nonexistent in other areas.
But there IS a perfect place for YOU.. if you do it right!
This is important!
Different areas attract different types of people!
Your experience will depend on:
🔵Where you live
🔵Who you surround yourself with
Don’t judge Panama based on one person or one group – find YOUR tribe!
Final Thoughts: Is Panama Right for You?
